During Jyotiraditya’s tenure in the Power Ministry, the team strove to:

  • Re-engage the thermal and hydro aspects of power
  • Attain energy self-sufficiency for India through capacity addition
  • Augment power supply

With power regeneration at the core of the agenda, the following successes were achieved:

  • Higher capacity addition leading to higher generation. Peak Shortage and Energy Deficit in the country reduced to as low as 4.2% and 4.5% respectively during 01.11.2012 to 31.12.2013.
  • Zero power shortages on certain days in some regions, indicating that the Ministry was able to completely meet the peak power demand of the day.
  • Highest ever demand met in a day was recorded as 129.8 GW in the month of September, 2013.
  • Coal allocation for about 150 FSAs equivalent to 60 GW of power, which remains a record till this date.
  • Numerous transmission and distribution initiatives that have seen great success.
  • The Southern region grid connected to the National Grid and there has been no repeat grid collapse.
  • Several distribution reforms that have been instrumental in the setting up of the Smart Grid
